Short of impeccable, this album is Royces stamp on Hip Hop history and will be the asterisk next to the year 2004. Fortunately, Nickle Nines witty wordplay followed by the gritty, fierce production carries the mood on Death Is Certain rather well. The albums only true weakness is its strength, the raw emotion and animosity unbalances his versitality making him seem one dimesional. As the curtain tails "Something Wrong With Him" concludes the album perfectly as he holds nothing back justifying his intense anger at the rap industry. The standouts of the album would be "Hip Hop", the DJ Premier gem is one of the few instances where he seems reminiscent rather than vexed, and the 2Pac influenced "I&Me" where he lets his fans know who his true number one fan is. In "I Promise" he bares his naked soul with lines such as "Im feeling like Nas did before he dropped Ether." as he promises himself that he would remain humble upon achieving mainstream success. The album opens up with, "Reguardless", a powerful statement to industry execs and peers alike showcasing his lyrical prowess accompanied by clouded piano loops and potent bass. The album itself is as solid as its dark, tentative title. DEATH IS CERTAIN is undoubtedly the most consistent Hip Hop LP of 2004.
